How stablecoins will reshape corporate treasuries
The following is by Mesh Head of Legal, Steve Aquino
The current discourse around stablecoins is focused almost entirely on payments. This makes sense: payments are a natural use case for stablecoins.
But this focus can overshadow their broader potential. Stablecoins are redefining value transfer, for which payments are just one piece. By enabling fast transactions, minimal fees, 24/7 market access, and programmable transfers, assets like USDT and USDC are poised to disrupt all levels of the global financial system.
In this article, I explore how corporate treasuries are a prime target for stablecoin disruption.
Current inefficiencies
Legacy treasury management processes suffer from a number of inefficiencies that obstruct financial agility:
- Liquidity access: Limited network uptime (such as Fedwire’s evening cutoffs) delay settlements.
- Transfer speed: International transfers crawl through intermediaries and correspondent banks, causing delays and accumulating fees.
- Cash flow timing: Aligning invoice payments with accounts payable is cumbersome and exposes companies to foreign exchange volatility.
- Capital deployment: Moving funds into yield-bearing assets is slowed by delayed settlements and high transfer costs.
- Opacity: Manual processes obscure real-time transaction visibility, complicating audits and reporting.
- Operational costs: High fees for transfers and settlements erode financial efficiency.
These pain points underscore the need for a better system to streamline treasury functions. Stablecoins have emerged as the best solution.
Stablecoins to the rescue
Stablecoins can eliminate all of these headaches because with stablecoins liquidity is ever-present–the blockchain has no closing hours:
- Liquidity: The “always on” nature of stablecoins means treasury managers can handle liquidity needs in real time. USDT can be converted to Euros, for example, by bypassing intermediaries, minimizing FX risks, and accelerating transactions.
- Speed: Direct, real-time transfers streamline operations. For goods transactions, stablecoins’ instant, immutable settlements enable merchandise release or receipt without waiting days for funds to clear.
- Capital efficiency: Funds can be swiftly moved into yield-bearing assets and their returns redeployed as needed, creating a cycle of optimized liquidity.
- Transparency: Operating on public blockchains, stablecoins provide real-time transaction visibility, simplifying audits and reporting.
- Automation: Programmable operations like automated recurring payments or vendor invoices enable dynamic and responsive treasury functions.
- Costs: Blockchain-based transactions incur much lower fees.
These advantages position stablecoins as a game-changer, revolutionizing treasury management with unmatched efficiency and agility.
Where Mesh comes in
At Mesh, we make global stablecoin transfers possible by connecting everyone from end to end, no matter where or how you store your assets. We let you:
- Pay and settle in the asset of our choice. Want to send USDC but have the recipient get Bitcoin? Mesh handles the back-end technicalities.
- Send and receive funds from various sources. Want to move funds from your institutional account to a supplier who only wants to receive funds in their self-hosted wallet? Again, Mesh makes that possible.
- Optimize transfer routing. We automatically select the most cost-effective and time-efficient path for a transfer.
Final thoughts
People call stablecoins crypto’s killer app for a reason. For me, it’s because they represent perhaps the most efficient way to transfer value by leveraging the speed and flexibility of blockchain.
Companies are already starting to move their treasury operations from clunky legacy systems to the blockchain. I can’t help but predict that the shift will hit critical mass sooner than we expect.
The future of treasury management is on-chain, and stablecoins are paving the way.
